Drivers be alert, deer breeding season is here

Deer breeding season occurs from mid-October through December. Below, Lake Erie Nature & Science Center shares information about deer mating habits and tips for drivers this fall.

Male deer (or bucks) travel together in “bachelor groups” during late winter, spring and summer. In early fall they begin marking their territory by scraping the ground or rubbing their antlers on trees. They will playfully fight with each other, known as sparring. Eventually, increased testosterone and aggressiveness will force the bucks to separate and begin chasing does (female deer).

White-tailed deer are active around the clock, most often at dawn and dusk. Their unpredictable behavior during breeding season can prove hazardous to humans and result in serious accidents.

Drivers should remember these tips during breeding season:

  • Slow down and be attentive while driving through zones marked with deer signs
  • If you see one deer, assume others are nearby
  • Prepare for sudden stops and always wear a seatbelt
  • Do not swerve to avoid hitting a deer
  • If you hit a deer, pull your car to the side of the road, turn on your hazard lights, and report the incident to local police

The nonprofit Lake Erie Nature & Science Center provides free wildlife education and rehabilitation services to the public. If you have a question about local wildlife, please call 440-871-2900 to speak with an expert.

We are excited to announce that Lake Erie Nature & Science Center has been chosen to participate in a charitable giving campaign, sponsored and funded by Target.

Now through December 31st, you can vote for the Center and help direct Target’s giving to benefit free general admission, free wildlife rehabilitation services, and nature-based programming for all ages. This program is available through Target’s mobile app, online at www.target.com/circle, and in stores.

We are asking our supporters to help us make the most of this incredible opportunity. Every vote counts to help us receive a portion of the available Target funds. As you earn more votes, you can keep voting multiple times during the campaign!

Enrolling In Target Circle
Guests in participating markets can enroll in the Giving Program for free. There are three
easy ways to sign up for Target Circle:
1. Sign up at target.com/circle
2. Download the Target app
3. Provide phone number at checkout

Earning Votes
Guests earn one vote every time they make an eligible purchase at Target, online and in-store. In this regard, it’s not your typical voting program. Members earn votes as they shop at Target.

Earning Votes In Store: At checkout, a Target Guest may scan their Wallet barcode in the Target App at the time of purchase, or scan the barcode on their receipt with the Target App within seven (7) days of purchase.

Earning Votes Online: To earn a vote on a Target.com or Target App purchase, a Target guest must have joined Target Circle and be signed into their Target.com account when they place an order. Some are not eligible to accrue votes. See terms and conditions for ineligible purchases.

Casting Votes
Casting votes is a completely digital experience. A Target Circle Member may login to their Target account at target.com or on the mobile app and follow the prompts and instructions to vote. Nonprofits will display in a list with each organization’s name, logo, description, and website link.
